Everyone knows that Chilkoot Hill in Stillwater is incredibly steep. During the North Star Grand Prix, Chilkoot’s vertical slope becomes an intense challenge and earns its reputation as the steepest hill in North American bicycle racing.

At this event, “Your hair literally whips up when they [come down the hill],” says Jean Freidl, head of communications for the North Star Bike Festival. “It’s not like any of us riding our bikes.” Read more about Pedal Power

Rick Chrustowski, one of our favorite author/illustrators, is releasing his newest picture book June 16. In Bee Dance, Chrustowski brings the bees to life with great images and vivid descriptions. As with all of his picture books, Chrustowski does the research and gathers the facts before he writes and illustrates. Learn how bees do the waggle dance to communicate where they have found nectar. Hot Rods and Hot Dogs

On a series of Wednesdays throughout the summer, a crowd will gather in Stillwater’s Lowell Park to enjoy classic cars. Cruisin’ on the Croix features 300 hot rods and vintage cars, live music, food and vendors. It has drawn significant crowds in past years, so much so that this summer, the number of events has been cut down to accommodate parking for local businesses. Read more about Hot Rods and Hot Dogs

A Taste of Summer

Afton residents have been marking the start of summer with their popular Strawberry Festival since 1884. The festival originated as a way to honor the rich heritage of strawberry crops that have been growing in the area since the 1800s. A Guide to Celebrating the Fourth of July in the St. Croix Valley

During the summer, with ample sunshine and warm breezes coming off of the river, the St. Croix Valley naturally gets into a festive mood. So with the Fourth of July around the corner, we’re sure to find hometown parades and fireworks in the park up and down the river.

Second Annual Stillwater Log Jam

2014 marked the 80th Anniversary of the Stillwater Lumberjack Days Celebration. We re-focused the festival to be for the community of Stillwater and surrounding towns.

There are five board members on The Locals and our mission is to provide an engaging and educational event that welcomes families and community members to the birthplace of Minnesota to enjoy and learn about the cultural heritage, historical charm and local talent of our beloved river town.
