Elysabeth Kleinke’s Self-portrait Conveys the Fluidity of Youth

As art instructor, Dave Sorenson knows: it’s a tough world out there for a middle school artist. But St. Croix Preparatory’s Elysabeth Kleinke, daughter of Jim and Diane of Stillwater, earned the Gold Key in the Scholastic Art Award for seventh grade. “Her award was in one of the most competitive categories,” Sorenson says, so we caught up with the now 14-year-old eighth-grader.

A New Bar Lounge Opens in Hudson

To make sure guests didn’t have to wait for a table at San Pedro Cafe, owner Pete Foster implemented a no-wait app that allowed customers to add their name to a list without having to come into the restaurant ahead of time. A side benefit: It also provided analytics that showed that many customers who signed up for a table ended up dining elsewhere because of long wait times. A Celebration of Birdland

Birds migrating up the Mississippi Flyway for spring always weight the trees and fill the air of the St. Croix Valley.

To celebrate returning birdsong, ArtReach St. Croix will hold its fourth annual birdhouse auction May 16. Artists in the area pick up blank wooden birdhouses mid-March, ready to paint and adorn—to deck them with jewels and glue ceramics to them—for an auction that benefits ArtReach. FamilyMeans—a Stillwater-based nonprofit that’s been in operation since 1963 and has locations across the metro, southeastern Minnesota and western Wisconsin—seeks to “strengthen communities by strengthening families.” The organization does that through a full line-up of educational and support services for the aging and their caregivers, youth programs, grief and marriage counseling, mental health services, and financial support and education.
