A Celebration of Birdland

Artfully crafted birdhouses go up for auction next month.

Birds migrating up the Mississippi Flyway for spring always weight the trees and fill the air of the St. Croix Valley.

To celebrate returning birdsong, ArtReach St. Croix will hold its fourth annual birdhouse auction May 16. Artists in the area pick up blank wooden birdhouses mid-March, ready to paint and adorn—to deck them with jewels and glue ceramics to them—for an auction that benefits ArtReach.

ArtReach is a nonprofit that promotes the fairs and artist networks between Taylors Falls and Hastings, Minn., and organizes events like Take Me to the River in September.

Next month, professional and casual artists will have transformed 40 birdhouses into works of art. The birdhouses will go for between $50 and $850. “The artists really rise to the challenge,” executive director Heather Rutledge says.
