For hearty Midwesterners, there’s never a bad time of year to indulge in an ice cream treat while outdoors. In fact, people have been enjoying Stillwater’s annual Winter Ice Cream Social at Mulberry Point in Lowell Park since the event began in 1950. After fading away for a period of time, the event was brought back approximately nine years ago. Hosted by the Washington County Historical Society, the event features free ice cream, coffee, hot chocolate and root beer floats, all provided by local businesses. Chili can also be purchased for a small fee. Attendees can ice skate, play vintage baseball and warm up by a bonfire. Washington County Historical Society executive director Brent Peterson says winter is the ideal time for an ice cream social.
“Think about ice cream socials in July—it’s hot, there are bees and the ice cream is running down your hand and arm,” Peterson says. “The colder the better!”
