A Unique Way of Bringing Science and Art Together

Science and art aren’t regularly combined, but the Science Museum of Minnesota’s Pine Needles Artists in Residence program, run through St. Croix Watershed Research Station, does just that. “The Pine Needles Art Residence Program was started to explore connections between science and art,” founder Sharon Mallman says. The program gives artists and writers the opportunity to spend two-to-four weeks in a vintage St. Croix River cabin provided by the Science Museum of Minnesota. Review: The New Current Restaurant at Afton House Inn and Drink Recipe from Pier 500 in Hudson

One could say the past six months at the Afton House Inn mark quite a sea change for Current Restaurant—literally and figuratively. For the first time since the in-hotel dining venue opened in 2011, co-owners Dan and Dave Jarvis say, the menu is changing, the décor has been completely revamped and the general food philosophy is taking a more “current” bent, all under the direction of multiple executive and sous chefs. Inside a Hudson Home with Spectacular Waterfront Views

Ken and Gloria Derks spent time in a neighboring home over the years and fell in love with the location.“We never really thought we’d be here but then the property became available,” Ken says.

Whomever coined the phrase “a picture is worth a thousand words,” perhaps understood the magical feeling evoked by a waterfront view.  

“I mean look at it,” says homeowner Gloria Derks with a smile, on why she and her husband Ken purchased the property.

Growing Good Farmers

Big River Farms is a St. Croix Valley certified organic vegetable farm comprising, according to Minnesota Food Association programs manager Laura Hedeen, about 30 tillable acres. Small but mighty, these 30 acres have a huge impact on the lives of many Minn. farmers, particularly farmers who are people of color, recent immigrants and/or refugees.

While most people's experience ends when they leave the fair, for the Fairest of the Fair, the experience lasts the entire year. The St. Croix County Fairest of the Fair has been going on for over 30 years and has given people the chance to grow and promote the fair and the agriculture industry. A New Mosque Reflects the Area’s Growing Diversity

Muslims in the St. Croix Valley and throughout the east metro will soon have a beautiful, brand new house of worship. Construction on a mosque in Afton began in 2017 and was set to open this past summer. Plans had been in the works for almost a decade. Members of the Islamic Society of Woodbury and the East Metro say they are excited to have such a spacious gathering spot, and look forward to the opportunities it offers to serve and connect with fellow residents of the St. Croix Valley and beyond.
