Living a modern life in a historic town like Stillwater, Minn., one tends to forget that the familiar streets are the same ones people walked on during past war times. This is not the 19th-century Stillwater of Civil War times.

While Laura Sobiech had many dreams for her future, she never aspired to become an author, inspirational speaker and childhood cancer advocate. Six years ago, she was happily raising four children with her husband Rob and leading an active family life in the St. Croix Valley. Life was good.

For nearly 30 years, photography was an after-hours passion for Hudson-based Jeff Bucklew. He’d work in the dark room late into the night and head to his day job the next morning. Then last June, Bucklew retired from the printing industry to become a full-time photographer.
