After celebrating the photography of David Parker in our December issue, word came to us that another local artist is utilizing his charming portrait of the iconic Stonebridge school in a book, The Magic that was Stonebridge, by longtime local elementary teacher and retired administrator, Bernie Anderson.
Stonebridge piloted an open concept in which children could move between grade levels at their own pace, a sometimes controversial education theory. In addition to talking about the history of Stonebridge, the book also delves into other current elementary theory, including philosophies behind the federally mandated No Child Left Behind.
“It is an interesting, readable, well-researched and well-written history of the school, outlining the vision and enthusiasm of the staff who brought a dream to fruition,” says one of the book’s champions, Nancy Hof, who hosted an open house launch party last December, a month after the book was published. “Bernie was here to greet Stonebridge colleagues and to sign books of those who want a copy.” Books are available by contacting Bernie Anderson directly at bbjm@att.net. $15, plus $2–$3 for postage.
