What’s my inspiration behind this photograph? I crave situations where the lighting can change dramatically during a shooting session. The combination of early morning light and fog always present a challenge because both change so fast and independently!

Each spring the St. Croix Valley Studio Tour connects artists with their admirers, and as in years past, the 2016 artOPENer doesn’t disappoint, showcasing local art with an eclectic behind-the-scenes tour that opens studio doors to the public.

Bob White used to page through outdoor magazines, looking at the illustrations. “While the stories were compelling, the artwork reached out and grabbed me,” White says.

When speaking with Taia Morley about her career as an illustrator and designer, it is clear that she has succeeded in blurring the lines between work and play.

Tom Maakestad seemed destined to become an artist. He grew up on a farm in Northfield as the son of Barbara and the late John Maakestad, who had been an art professor at St. Olaf College. Tom had always noticed the scenery around him, even during bus rides to and from school.
