I’ve been obsessed with makeup since I was a preteen. As I’ve “matured,” I’ve discovered that the secret to any truly great look starts with really good skin.
Sure, I drink water, wear sunscreen and get plenty of rest. But I’ve also got a complicated, multi-step skincare routine that includes different cleansers, serums, lotions, oils and elixirs for day and night. There’s also twice weekly exfoliation and what I call “Sunday Skin Day,” a ritual devoted to masks, peels and any other treatment that might help undo the prior week’s damage.
Kowalski’s offers a few of my favorite skincare and beauty products. Yes, I’m currently crazy for our new partnership with Mendota Heights-based Sigma Beauty, but I’m talking about tastier stuff. Believe it or not, some of the best care for your skin is food.
Science tells us that omega-3s can help keep skin supple, antioxidants like vitamin E help protect against free radicals, zinc protects against inflammation and vitamin C helps with collagen production. Beta carotene, lutein and lycopene have been shown to protect against sun damage and may also help prevent wrinkling. Some of my favorite foods (salmon, tomatoes, red bell peppers, nuts, avocados, broccoli and even dark chocolate) may help keep skin healthy, strong, glowing and gorgeous. Great skin from groceries? As a true beauty junkie, I’m definitely down with that.
ARGENTINIAN SALMON
SERVES 4
- 1 ½ lbs. salmon
- 1 Tbsp. Kowalski's extra virgin olive oil
- ½ tsp. kosher salt
- freshly ground Kowalski's black peppercorns, to taste
- ½ cup Kowalski's chimichurri
- ½ lb. yellow and red grape or cherry tomatoes, halved (or quartered, if large)
- 1 avocado, diced
- ¼ cup full-fat plain yogurt
Cut salmon into four portions; brush lightly with oil and season with salt and pepper. Grill fish, skin side down, over medium-high heat until flaky and opaque throughout (10–15 minutes, depending on thickness of the fish). Meanwhile, smear an equal amount of chimichurri on each of four serving plates. When salmon is done, transfer a piece to each plate, leaving skin behind, on top of the chimichurri. Scatter tomatoes and avocado evenly on top of the fish. Dollop with yogurt and serve immediately.

One-half of this recipe’s fat content is in the form of healthy omega-3s. It also contains heart-helping monounsaturated fats from extra virgin olive oil and avocado. This dish is also rich in vitamins A, C, D and K, plus potassium and selenium.
