Imagine a world in which everyone, no matter his or her circumstances, was recognized and celebrated for overcoming personal challenges. Thanks to the Special Olympics, a glimpse into that world can be seen at its summer games, held right here in the St. Croix Valley.
For the fourth year, Stillwater Area High School will host the annual Minnesota Special Olympics Summer Games on June 18-20. Two thousand athletes and coaches will gather to compete in track and field, volleyball, tennis and gymnastics—and another 2,000 volunteers will work behind the scenes. The athletes, ages 8 and older, and representing teams from throughout Minnesota—including the St. Croix Valley Lumberjacks—will participate in the inspiring and competitive games.
Special Olympics Minnesota offers children and adults with intellectual disabilities year-round sports training and competitions. Through its athletic, health and leadership programs, people with intellectual disabilities transform themselves, their communities and the world. .
Ever since the event moved from the University of Minnesota’s Minneapolis campus to Stillwater, “We haven’t looked elsewhere, because of the welcome from the community, the school and the space that this provides,” says Mark Anderson, senior manager of unified sports and competition at Special Olympics Minnesota.
In addition to the games, the event offers a Wellness Village Area, arts and crafts, photo booths, inflatable games, an entertainment stage and more.
