Afton residents have been marking the start of summer with their popular Strawberry Festival since 1884. The festival originated as a way to honor the rich heritage of strawberry crops that have been growing in the area since the 1800s. Today, the festival offers something for everyone, whether you’re looking for local art, dancing or entertaining activities for children. “It’s always a family-friendly event,” says event manager Lacy Vreeland, one that she says includes fire truck demonstrations, a raptor from the Carpenter Nature Center and a stamp competition for local sixth-graders. For those interested in attending, “Bring a lawn chair in case you want to sit and listen to music,” Vreeland says. “Come hungry and bring your wallet because there’s going to be some great shopping and food.”
