Volunteers in the Valley

Community Thread’s Spring into Service event benefits the St. Croix Valley.

For the past six years, residents of the St. Croix Valley have rolled up their sleeves to help make Community Thread’s annual event, Spring into Service, a success. Community Thread is a Stillwater-based nonprofit organization that specializes in volunteerism and senior issues, and supports the idea that each act of service is a thread that ties people, communities and lives together. Annually, the group provides services and volunteer opportunities to nearly 20,000 individuals.

Last year, the Spring into Service event drew 128 volunteers who contributed 384 hours of service to the community. Volunteers participated in a variety of projects, from planting trees at Lake Elmo Park Reserve to assembling math kits for summer school students.

“The exciting thing for me about this event is that there’s really something for everyone,” says Sara Pennebecker, volunteer center program manager at Community Thread. “We do service in the morning, and then we invite people back to Community Thread for a light lunch. It’s always good to see the energy in the room, people laughing and having a good time.”

This year’s event is expected to draw 300 volunteers, who will volunteer at new service sites and on larger projects.
