June 2017 St. Croix Valley Magazine

In the June issue get your summer brew on with a seasonal must-drink list from seven St. Croix Valley breweries.

There’s something about the Valley that makes it appealing to transplants from both coasts—even sight unseen. Born and raised in Los Angeles, in 2011 Christopher Palbicki and his wife took that leap.

The St. Croix River—local businesses, homes and even this magazine are all built around the great body of water. It’s no surprise that any spot offering a vantage point of the Valley’s crowning glory would be popular among residents and visitors alike.

Forty different species of mussel stud the St. Croix River bottom. Among them, the hazel-shelled Higgins-eye mussels distribute their eggs on the gills of passing fish. Factors such as pollution and invasive animals have placed these mollusks on the endangered list.

We spend a lot of time on our feet throughout the course of our lives. Whether walking or running, our feet carry us through life, but it is all too easy to take them for granted. Proper foot care is always essential, and it can become more difficult as we age.

After Jon Francis tragically lost his life in 2004, his father, David, co-founded the Jon Francis Foundation as a way both of commemorating his son and continuing his son’s mission of outdoor involvement and advocacy.

Coming in late summer, watch our magazine for a story on Dariush Moslemi, a longtime Stillwater resident (with his wife, Sarah, and five children between the ages of 4 and 15), as his ambitions to open a new restaurant space and more Studio One Yoga studios regionally becomes reality.

Art Along the Willow is an annual art fair sponsored by a local group aptly named Friends of Willow River and Kinnickinnic state parks. The event hosts up to 800 people.

“It takes a village” is a phrase that comes to mind with the efforts of many members of the community coming together to put on a great day for kids. The third annual A Summer Day will be happening July 22, an event put on by Friends of a Summer Day (FSD) in cooperation with Solid Ground.

The annual Park Art Fair in New Richmond, Wis., is celebrating its 50th anniversary, coinciding with the 10th birthday of the Blues and Brews Festival. “It’s about celebrating the unique beginning up in Star Prairie,” chamber director Rob Kreibich says.
