Pageants are more than just beautiful gowns, outstanding talent, sleek sashes and pretty crowns. These competitions let women showcase their confidence and skills that encourage community growth and improvement.

Last February, Afton-Lakeland Elementary School fifth-grader Taysha Hein was faced with a heartbreaking diagnosis: acute myeloid leukemia, an aggressive type of cancer of the blood and bone marrow.

Mad Men fans dressed the part for a May event at the Stillwater Library featuring guest of honor Rich Sommer, “Harry Crane,” from Mad Men.

Zachary Quinn exhibited an entrepreneurial spirit at a young age while growing up in Afton. That spirit was put to great use years later, in 2012, when he met Brian Keller in an entrepreneurship class at the University of St. Thomas.

For the past six years, residents of the St. Croix Valley have rolled up their sleeves to help make Community Thread’s annual event, Spring into Service, a success.
