There’s something to be said about being named the crème de la crème, best of the best, top dogs among the St. Croix Valley, perhaps even Best in Show. An accolade by any name is an affirmation of hard work, commitment to quality, and often investments of time and money. There’s a real honor to being named Best in the robust and vibrant St. Croix Valley. Such is the case for the following 30-some most-admired restaurants, shops, services and people, as voted by you, our local consumers, judge and jury, as well as some spots around town our editorial staff thought warranted a second look. So find a cozy spot to sit down and peruse these pages for your own favorites from throughout the Valley. And if you don’t see something, be sure to nominate the place or category right now for next year. Let’s celebrate the Best of the St. Croix Valley together!

Paws and Claws opened 20 years ago as a grooming salon. It was Tari Nestrud, purchasing the business in 2005, who advanced services including lodging, private and in-home training, and a doggie day camp in addition to the spa-like grooming services. “I would see dogs go to grooming and sit there all day, and I thought, ‘There must be a better way,’” she says. This forward-thinking mentality continues to make it a top pick for local pet enthusiasts.
Runners-up: Animal Inn Pet Resort and Spa (Lake Elmo), Under One Woof (Stillwater)
Best Place for Kids
Phipps Center for the Arts
In keeping with The Phipps Center for the Arts’ mission, “Celebrate the creative spirt,” it’s no surprise the nonprofit offers opportunities for children to participate in and enjoy the visual and performing arts. Dance classes, children’s theater productions and Summer Art Camp are the most-popular children’s offerings, director John Potter says, but the center offers no fewer than 36 artistic endeavors geared to kids ages 5 and older throughout the year (standouts include music lessons, duct tape art, hand-built and wheel-based pottery, stained glass and wearable art of all kinds). In addition, creative birthday parties are offered in partnership with Messes and Masterpieces. Watch for productions of Little Red Robin Hood, A Charlie Brown Christmas and an adaptation of Junie B. Best Patio Dining
Pier Five Hundred
Nothing quite compares to enjoying a cocktail and appetizers alfresco, with unparalleled views of the lush St. Croix River Valley. Nibble and nosh on delicious hors d’ouerves atop Pier Five Hundred’s wood deck, simply the best seat in downtown Hudson for picturesque views of the historic pier and St. Croix River, rain or shine, food and beverage director Lori Papineau says. Featuring a menu of classic American cuisine, Papineau recommends one of the numerous and flavorful flatbreads ($9–$11), which are popular to share as an appetizer or filling enough to serve as a meal.
Runners-up: Dock Café (Stillwater), San Pedro Café (Hudson)
Best Restaurant
Lolo American Kitchen and Craft Bar
Since opening in 2012, Lolo American Kitchen and Craft Bar has gotten much acclaim for its bar philosophy, balanced cocktails using the complete array of a modern bartender’s pantry (bitters, tinctures, shrubs) to create new and innovative drinks while reinterpreting (and reintroducing) the classics. But even director of bar operations Joe Ehlenz admits the well-rounded nature of both food and drink is what brings about Lolo’s 2017 title as Best Restaurant in the Valley. Head chef Brad Nordeen credits the fresh, local and simple ingredients executed with exciting, complex flavors—a combination of small plates, gourmet burgers and adaptations of American street foods (think: bacon-wrapped hot dogs or Korean barbecue hanger steak tacos).
Runners-up: San Pedro Café (Hudson), Phil’s Tara Hideaway (Stillwater)
Best Tavern / Bar
Barker’s Bar and Grill
Barker’s has a proficiency for saucy wings and crave-worthy burgers. The wing selection boasts a diversity of flavors, from traditional barbecue for the mild-mannered member of your party to a bit more zing for the adventurous sorts. And the gourmet burgers, a veritable smorgasbord of options, from the everyday Bullseye burger—a made-to-order offering of smoked cheddar cheese, hickory-smoked bacon and smokehouse barbecue topped with lettuce, tomato and crispy red onion ($10.95)—to “my personal favorite,” says owner Pete Foster, the Casino el Camino ($9.95). Called a “bistro of a tavern,” Foster says his goal is to elevate usual pub fare with house-smoked meats, fresh and locally sourced baked goods, and a focus on scratch cooking.
Runners-up: The Agave Kitchen (Hudson), Lolo American Kitchen and Craft Bar (Stillwater)
Best Breakfast
Oasis Café
One way to stand out among breakfast offerings is to offer the meal all day, seven days a week. Established in 1957, Oasis Cafe boasts a revamped menu that entices customers of all ages. A spectacular kids’ meal ensures the family-friendly nature, as do oddities on the menu like favorite mac and cheese pancakes ($8.35). Owner Craig Beemer says many adults are hesitant to try them, but they inevitably fall in love at first bite. (Imagine homemade noodles with crispy bacon and a sprinkling of cheddar cheese covered in a pancake blanket.) “It’s awesome because you get the sweet and salty flavors,” Beemer says.

In January, shortly after we posted the readers’ choice survey at stcroixvalleymag.com, we heard from Stillwater resident Michelle Cherrier, who said, “I would like to see Farrell’s extreme body shaping in Stillwater make your list. That’s what I would have voted for.” Naturally intrigued, we investigated the kickboxing-based, circuit strength-training classes and were impressed by the before and after photos depicting realistic results. Farrell’s of Stillwater is a franchise owned by Leslie Egan and Abby O’Reilly, who say the key to the success of clients is the regular 10-week wellness challenges, each of which ends with a winner (most inches lost and based off of healthy BMI results) worth as much as $1,000.
