Alternative Stillwater Sports

Shoot a three-pointer— or a clay pigeon?

Collaborating with independent providers, Stillwater Area High School offers a smorgasbord of sports options, including horse riding, mountain biking and martial arts—so students can letter without having to dribble, punt or score. Here are three of our favorite examples this school year.

Clay Target Team
Coach: Matt F. Simcik
Years at Stillwater: 6
Number of students participating: From a first-year showing of 17, the sport has grown to more than 85 students this year.
Levels: “Level is determined by the average score [number of targets shot] over the year,” Simcik says. “We allow kids who are just starting out to come and learn and compete, and we encourage shooters who are more committed and more competitive to join the Minnesota Clay Target League and the Scholastic Clay Target Program.”

G-Team Snowboarding

Coach: Kelsey Berquam
Years at Stillwater: 11
Number of students participating: Around four
Levels: Varsity—this hybrid sport brings coaches from local experts The G Team

Bowling
Coach: Brian Gibson

Number of students participating: 10–15
Levels: This co-ed option has junior varsity and varsity levels, as well as opportunities to letter.
